Title: Application of Metacognition Strategies and Awareness when Reading Texts

In a reading process, comprehending a text would be the major aim of the reader. The ability to comprehend is normally associated with students’ field of study at tertiary levels. Some students face difficulty in developing comprehension while reading the text and they also find it difficult to apply specific reading strategy. This research is conducted to examine the perspective of university students regarding text comprehension by using a qualitative research approach. Eight students enrolled in the bachelor of education programme participated in this study as respondents. Data were collected through interviews, document analysis, and observation. The findings indicate that students have various metacognition perspectives to interpret comprehension ability of a text. The differences in this perspective are also influenced by the application of reading strategies, the level of text difficulty, type of text and students’ perception of the texts read.

Reading is a complex process that involves cognitive aspects which require suitable strategies to enable readers to gain meaning from the text that they have read. The effects of wrong perspective about reading, wrong choice of strategies applied when reading and the task that has been read are among the problems often occurred in the reading process. Hence, this research is intended to investigate the awareness level of meta-cognition when students read texts in the Malay language. This descriptive study consists of samples of 120 arts and science streams Form Four students from three schools around the Hulu Langat District, Selangor, Malaysia. Questionnaires on meta-cognition awareness and text comprehension test are used for data collection process. The research findings have revealed that students used meta-cognition strategies when reading texts. This is also in regards with the relationship between the level of meta-cognition strategy and school streams as well as gender.

KEUTAMAAN BAHAN DALAM PENGAJARAN DAN PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA MELAYU PADA SEKOLAH-SEKOLAH DI SELANGOR DARUL EHSAN, MALAYSIA

Dalam realitinya, kebanyakan guru mengajar lebih terikat dengan penggunaan buku teks. Maka akibat dari ketergantungan kepada buku teks ini boleh mengurangi keinginan guru untuk menyediakan bahan bantu mengajar. Sementara itu, guru yang baik dalam mengajarkan BM (Bahasa Melayu) juga perlu menguasai pengetahuan isi BM, aspek pedagogi dan pengetahuan isi pedagogi dalam usaha untuk meningkatkan mutu berbahasa pelajar. Kajian secara deskriptif ini menggunakan kaedah tinjauan. Soal selidik untuk pelajar dan guru BM disediakan untuk mendapatkan data yang berkaitan. Seramai 96 guru yang mengajar BM dan 278 pelajar dilibatkan dalam kajian ini dari beberapa buah sekolah di daerah Hulu Langat, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia. Data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa guru-guru berasa puas semasa mengajar jika menggunakan BBM (Bahan Bantu Mengajar). Proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran akan lebih berkesan dan isi pelajaran dapat disampaikan sepenuhnya. Manakala dari segi ekspektasi pelajar pula, jelas menunjukkan bahawa pelajar-pelajar berasa sangat seronok jika guru mereka menggunakan BBM semasa mengajar. Ini membantu pemahaman mereka terhadap isi pelajaran yang disampaikan oleh guru. BBM yang sesuai memberi kesan terhadap minat pelajar. Komputer merupakan BBM yang paling diminati. Ini menunjukkan bahawa guru perlu celik komputer bagi memenuhi keperluan pembelajaran pelajar kini.
